My artist heroes sought objects, which are seen and not looked at. Flags are used in environments where communication is challenging and wide-ranging interpretations are often confusing. I remain loyal to bridging the gap, all the while reinterpreting symbolic banners and their untapped ciphers. I create "flag art" assemblages by manipulating various textile fabrics with cuts and rips to achieve the highly textural surfaces that characterize my art. Inspired by the work of Peter Blake, Andy Warhol, and Jasper Johns, I've set out to artistically demystify the iconography of state flags. I mix my own brand of phrases with more traditional Golden State mottos: "Why Not Reinvent Yourself" and "Find Yourself Here", incorporating currency, coffee beans, coins, pills, shells, sand and pills into the pieces.
