Tips and Tricks to Enhance Your ProfileNews

Since Pi's been renovated, I'm sure a lot of you have some questions about how to deck out your profile. Beyond the new features, the visual differences are quite drastic as well, so hopefully this guide will be able to help you navigate through the process of enhancing your Pi profile, while taking advantage of what Pi profiles have to offer.

Most Simple and Important is the User Image
One important thing when building your profile on Pi is to have a user image. Your user image will show up pretty much anywhere you generate content, such as the region above your blog and event entries, and even in the talent directory, when someone hovers over your portfolio image. Your image will set you apart from all the other wonderfully talented users on Pi and provide a connection to the community that goes beyond what a username offers.

So how do I do it? Simply click "Edit Profile" link located in the left sidebar on your Profile.
A pop-up will appear and select "ACCOUNT" from the top of the new pop-up. In the Account Settings section, you'll be able to modify your password and customize notifications from Pi as well as upload a user image. Your image will appear first in the left sidebar on your profile. Further down the pop-up, you will see a section for "LOCATION". Your location will also appear in the left sidebar, below the user image when filled in. Remember, none of this is required, but it will give you a distinct and recognizable presence on Pi.

If you'd like to see a demonstration of where the user image is displayed, just look above at the "Published by" information underneath this entry's title. Hover over my name to read my bio.

Filling in Your Profile
Back in the Profile section within the pop-up, you may customize what "MY TALENTS INCLUDE". That section is reserved for what you'd like to be known for or classify yourself as from an occupational perspective. If you do not find a selection that describes what your talents include, then enter anything you'd like within the "OTHER" section.

So with a new badass profile picture, location and your talents displayed you're almost ready to take on Planet illogica by storm. The last few steps on customizing your identity includes adding your biography, also known as the "ABOUT YOU AND YOUR WORK" section. Whether it is novel-length or a simple catch phrase, you share a little bit of yourself to the rest of the Pi community. Similar to how your user image will appear sitewide, same with your biography.

If you'd want a name to be displayed other than your username, such as you know, your real name, then you can enter it in the "Personal Info" section and enter in the name you'd like to be displayed.

Additional things to enhance your profile include adding links to other websites you have and customizing and creating your own Pi resume, all of which will appear in the left sidebar of your Profile.

Creating a Portfolio Fills Up the Largest Space on Your Profile
One of the most unique features on Pi is that artists can show of their work in an online portfolio with a very easy to use interface. Create a portfolio through the create links, found near the top of your profile, or through the upper right hand corner links. Portfolios consist of a cover image (this is the image that will be used to represent your portfolio and the content within), a title, description and the portfolio content. Descriptions for portfolios are optional but help explain your work to the viewer, if necessary. After you've created your portfolio, you may add content to it, or "add media". You can upload multiple images in bulk at once quickly through our media uploader. To include videos, you may use "Web" section within the "add media" pop-up. Currently, the Web feature integrates with YouTube and Flickr, so you just enter in the url or web address of the video (not the channel link) or image and click "submit". Within the portfolios, you may drag and drop your media to change the display order to your liking. You may also directly edit or delete the media or portfolio item by hovering over the media item.

The latest portfolio you create will automatically become your "Featured Portfolio". Your featured portfolio will serve as the main attraction of your profile, displayed at the top.

Let Others Know More About You (Visually) from Your Other Internet Presences Through the Linked Accounts Features
You may have noticed an empty feed upon the creation of your new account. Filling is up is easy. The first way is to use the "Linked Accounts" feature and the second is to create content on Pi and the third is to join groups, connect with other artists, or just follow other artists.

Using Linked Accounts Keeps Your Profile Updated Automatically
The linked accounts feature allows you to pull in information automatically from your accounts on other sites and link to and display them nicely in your user feed so the community may stay up to date on what you're doing. You can connect your Pi account to your Flickr, Twitter, Tumblr and your blog feed. All you have to do is add in your username from each of the sites mentioned and that's it! To access the Linked Accounts page, you can click the "Edit Profile" link from your profile on the left hand side and select "Linked Accounts" in the top menu of the pop-up, or hover over "My Account" from the upper right hand corner of the browser and select "Linked Accounts".

Populate your Profile by Creating Content
Upon the creation of blog entries or events, a new "Content" tab will appear next to the "Featured" and "Portfolio" tabs in the top section of your profile. Events can also be created within groups, and will also show up in your "Content" tab.

Joining Groups to Show Others Your Interests
Pi has a new groups feature so users can collaborate on likeminded projects or share ideas together. Group members have the ability to message all of the members and view their contact information; this information is not available when you're not a member of the group. To show the groups that you're a part of on your profile, just click "Show on Profile" in the top right side of the group.

To get Noticed
By creating a portfolio with a cover image, you will automatically be brought up in Pi's front page slider, which randomly displays Pi talent, and along with a user profile image, you'll be added to the Talent Directory in the "new" section and under the talents you have classified yourself under.

Other Interesting Things
On your own profile, you may not see the "Message" link because why would you need to message yourself right? However, on other profiles, you will be able to see the link. Also, you can see an activity of your connections and people you're following on Pi under the extra tabs in the feed section of your profile and those who are following you or connected will see your feed activity.

A New Day, A New Website!News

It was so nice to finally send that newsletter out last night! for those of you who don't know what I'm referring to, here is the most recent newsletter from Pi founder Tonny Sorensen...

Even this cannot explain everything we went through in rebuilding this site for all of you wonderfully talented people.  Creating the tools and usability of a creative network is a lot harder than you might think.  Although we have held the same vision since 2009, without the right developers we could not bring that vision to life.  It is still and always a work in progress, but hopefully those of you who remember what planetillogica.com looked like in the beginning can see the amazing transformation it has gone through.

Now we happily reintroduce to you with all the speed and tools the 21st century has to offer, your very own organic planet.  Please check it out, refer it to your friends, tell your mother! Start a group! Upload a resume! Follow! Connect! EXPLORE THE PLANET! There are about 6,000 users, who although may not have updated their site in a while, still have some amazing projects.

Please feel free to message me with any questions or join the Beta Tester group to give feedback! Enjoy!

An Explanation of Our Creative Networking RebootNews
Hey everyone,

I am long due for an explanation.

Planetillogica has literally been a dormant planet for the entire 2011! Many of you have been wondering what the hell was going on...

Here is what we are doing and why:

For the past 5 years, since AFI Los Angeles helped us outline what a Online Creative Networking might look like in the future, we mapped out some tools using Drupal programming, the open source software community... As you all know Social Networking, Twitter, Tumbler, Youtube, Vimeo and more have been born in the same time period all with the goal of helping you showcase your creative world... So, in the beginning of the year we hired a genius developer, Solomon Rothman who basically told me I should scrap the entire site and rebuild it new in Drupal 7! After a momentary heart attack, nausea and depression, I decided to take Solomon's advice and prepare Pi for well into the future. In the quest for the ultimate Creative Networking Platform, we have worked hard to provide you with all the necessary tools, but at the end of the day I know the most important Pi asset is YOU.

Friend, I thank you for your patience from the bottom of my heart. Remember a strong Creative Network is built by you and many different kinds of talented folks, so please celebrate with us and invite all your creative peers into your own Pi-Network.

Here are some of the Pi features I personally love social networks that Pi aggregates from

1: Aggregation (linked accounts)

2: Groups

3: Featured Blog posts as news

(see About)

Or Create a group

Many of you love our events, opportunities and all the case studies that have been created through the ability to expand beyond ordinary boundaries through the Creative Networking at Planetillogica. (See case studies)

Please feel free to follow all updates and events from Solomon's and Destinee's Blog

Planetillogica.com, A cool creative network.

If you have logged into Planetillogica.com recently you’ve noticed things have started changing. We’ve been rolling out new features and re-designing everything. If you’ve never heard of Planet illogica before, you soon will. It’s a creative network for artistic people of all types. From models to photographers, to filmmakers, to web designers and people with big and small ideas, Pi is an active ecosystem of creativity.

When I first met Tonny Sorensen (the founder of Pi) and the rest of the Pi team, I was hit with a wave of energy and eccentric ideas. They were building something big, and they were looking for a developer who could help them realize an ambitious dream, to build a creative network that would offer creative people of all types the tools to showcase their work and an active social community that just being a member of would provide exciting opportunities. And above all it had to be "COOL", aka something you couldn't find on Facebook or deviant art, something I would personally want to use and be a part of.

From my initial rendezvous with Pi, I learned that the site had been around since 2009 and had gone through a slew of changes in the process of gaining over 5,000 members (many of whom are well known and from all over the world). It needed new software that could grow with it and support the big features and big ideas behind it. After a lot of discussion Pi was rebuilt using Drupal 7, an open source platform that powers diverse and varied websites ranging from the White House's Official Website to the Grammy awards. It would provide the structure and tools needed to come through on the grand creative vision. Drupal itself is the product of a community of developers that spans cultures and international barriers; a perfect choice for the Planet illogica creative network.

Current Features on Planetillogica.com include:

Portfolios with drag and drop images, audio and video. Showcase your work in any format and allow your visitors to browse through videos, images or audio in the same portfolio. Drag and drop an entire folder of media from your desktop or pull it directly from YouTube or Flickr. Everything is tag-able, linked to off your portfolios, can be re-ordered via a drag and drop interface and totally findable on Google and other search engines.

Linked Accounts – Keep your audience, your connections and your followers up to date with what you post on other networks. Pi will bring in your tweets, your Flickr images, your Tumblr content and any other feed from around the web directly to your activity stream, It updates every 5 minutes and immediately after you first enter your account info. It's easy and supports some specifically cool sub-features including:

  •  Twitter, it will automatically pull your new tweets and link your username to your twitter profile. It will pull images from Twitpic and post them in thumbnails in your feed (so your tweets show up with linked images and do not require an extra click). URLs are also automatically linked.
  •  Flickr - will fetch large linked images and create a beautiful stream of your new pictures or videos on this photo sharing site.
  •  Tumblr - will bring in your latest tumbles in image, video, or text form.
  •  Feed - Can fetch any RSS feed from any source including blogger, WordPress, and other sites.

Connections and Followers with Live Activity Streams – Connections are approved mutually linked accounts from people you work with, your friends, or just contacts that you want to follow and share your content and updates with. Follow other artists and people of interest. Login to Pi and check your 'following' activity stream, see new art, tweets, portfolios and blog entries from those people from sites around the world including pi, twitter, flickr, tumblr and more. Comment and get social in a live interactive feed.

Private Messaging with privacy controls – Control who can private message you, just your connections or everyone!

Comments with Privacy controls – Easily allow or disallow comments on any piece of content on pi. In accounts settings choose moderated and whether or not you want to be notified when people comment on your work.

Resumes – Create multiple resumes and share them with the world, or keep them private for now. Showcase your background, skills and experience in an easy to use resume builder.

Audio Playlists with ordering information – Upload mp3 or wav files, rearrange the playlist order and put the latest or featured one on your profile.

Creative Commons Media Licensing Information – Each piece of portfolio media has a option to choose a license that ranges from copyright all rights reserved to creative commons licenses that allow people to share or reuse your work in conditions you specify. Creative commons (http://creativecommons.org) is a non-profit organization that has already helped license and organize over a billion pieces of content – cool!

Events – Got an event? Let the Pi community and the world know about it, with location and gogole mapping, you get a direct link to where it is, when and why (Facebook event integration is also on the way).

Blogs that connect to the community. Blog directly from your profile. It will automatically go out to all your followers and connected pi member activity streams. They can comment and love it in one click! If it’s especially news worthy, drop us a line and we can feature it in Pi news and it will be seen by the entire community.

Pi news to keep up to date with what’s on Pi and see selected updates from noteworthy pi artists. Get exposure through the entire community to your information or updates too.

Talent Directory - Discover new artists and opportunities

Creative Call to Action – What you can do on Pi right now

  1. Showcase your work – if you haven’t already build out a better portfolio
  2. Connect your other accounts or creative spaces on various websites (twitter, flickr, tumblr more).
  3. Connect and follow other artists and people you find interesting
  4. Write something noteworthy on your blog and submit it as Pi news (if we feature it it will go ut to all our members and be on every page on this site)

What’s coming – where we’re going and what it means to you

  • Groups – public and private
  • More Activity stream features
  • Better interface and portfolios, control how your features portfolios look and work.
  • Chat and video conferencing.
  • Everything is improving give us feedback below.

Planet illogica's Unique "Linked Accounts" Feature
Our "Linked Accounts" feature pulls in information that you are already sharing on other social networking sites, such as Flickr, Twitter, Tumblr or any sorts of feeds, and displays them nicely on your Pi profile activity feed; this allows all the other Pi residents and any of our site's visitors to see what you've been doing on the web. Planet illogica's goal is to conveniently unite what's important to you all in one place. Your activity feed will show not only on your profile, but also on the private feeds of your Pi Connections (the people that you've connected with on Pi).

Linking up
While linking Flickr and Twitter accounts to your Pi profile self explanatory, the Tumblr and Feed linking may not be as intuitive. To connect your Tumblr account you need to know your username or that of whoever's Tumblr site you're linking to. The structure of Tumblr's link goes as follows: http://username.tumblr.com/ . Just paste the "username" part of the url into the Tumblr settings and you're good to go.

The feed however, is a little bit more complicated. Nearly every website that updates their content has a feed. "Feeds permit instant distribution of content and the ability to make it "subscribable."Subscribing to feeds makes it possible to review a large amount of online content in a very short time. "-Google

This is how you'd put your links in, minus the "Wordpress: and Blogger:" which are displayed as demonstration
Note: What you would put in the feed box would JUST be the url, by itself; you do NOT need the platform in which the site was built on (e.g. WordPress, Blogger)

Finding the feed varies depending on the site. On popular blogging sites such as Wordpress and Blogger, the format goes as follows:
WordPress: http://www.sampleurl.org/feed
Blogger: http://www.sampleurl.org/feeds/posts/default?alt=rss

Most of the blogs from Wordpress just require a "/feed" to be added at the end of the url, while Blogger requires a "/feeds/posts/default?alt=rss" at the end. Another thing to look for is the RSS icon. You may recognize it if you're not already familiar with it. It's usually an orange square with a wave of patterns that symbolize a broadcast. If a site has the icon, click it and copy the url at the top of the page and paste it into the "FEED URL" box under Linked Accounts.

If all else fails when looking for the rss feed, there is another alternative for Firefox users. When using the latest version of Firefox, you may need to right click on the very top bar to enable the "Menu Bar". Once that is enabled, click "Tools" then select "Page Info" from the drop down. A pop-up should appear shortly with some information about the site you're on. Click the tab that says "Feeds" with the RSS logo and use the url for RSS. Below are some screen captures to help you understand the process just mentioned.

This is how to activate the menu bar to get to the "Tools" section of Firefox  After you expand the "Tools" menu, click on Page info and a pop up will appear

The popup that appears after you select "Page Info" from the "Tools" drop-down
This is the popup that appears after you select "Page Info" from the "Tools" drop-down. Select feeds and the url to the feeds will display within the box within the popup.

New Hysteria Prints Available!

by ncwinters on June 17, 2011

There was such positive response to the American McGee’s Alice: Madness Returns painting, that I decided to do a limited print release. The painting sold rather quickly, which is always a bonus, and many of you personally requested prints. So I’m here to deliver.

The prints are on the same paper and same page size as the Down The Rabbit Hole prints, (of which there are a few left) and is a slightly larger image area. The edition size is still rather small: only 25 will be made, hand signed and numbered.

I’m super pleased with the quality of both prints so far and hope you’ve been enjoying them as well. If interest continues, I plan on releasing more prints throughout the year, and hopefully get on a regular schedule to make more art available for everyone at an affordable price. I realize not everyone can drop a thousand dollars or more, but I’ve always believed art should be accessible to anyone. Hopefully this is another step along that path. One minor note- I’ve had to up my shipping costs outside the U.S., due to increasing costs and my desire to keep my production and service as professional as I can. Apologies if this is an inconvenience, and hopefully it isn’t a deal breaker!

Here’s a little more technical info on the prints: limited edition high-quality archival giclee print on 140 lb. (300 gsm) Entrada Rag Bright White acid-free 100% cotton. The image size is 12″ x 17.75″, printed on a 13″ x 19″ sheet. Only 25 will be made, and each print is hand signed and numbered. Each print is shipped flat. All prices include domestic shipping. To purchase a print, head on over to the store here.

Here’s the original:

Hysteria
(original painting- acrylic on paper)
Image size: 12″ x 17.75″ on paper size: 13″ x 19″
Edition of 25, each hand-signed and numbered.

And here’s some glamour shots (pardon my shoddy photography):
