"Working under the pseudonym Plasticgod, internationally known Los Angeles artist Doug Murphy has established himself as a relentless pop culture manipulator and multiples revivalist. The clean, minimalist forms of LEGO-like heads and figures become a mold in which Plasticgod forces the faces and bodies of an ever expanding pantheon of pop icons. Making works that drip with saccharine colors and simple shapes that reduce the famous and infamous to their most basic visual identifiers, his fixation surges forth with a relentless mercantile fury, reflective of his chosen subjects" - Marshall Astor
Plasticgod's success has fared well with sold works to an extensive list of 200 or more Grammy Award and Academy Award winning music and movie celebrities including Robert Downey Jr., Anne Hathaway, Seth Green, Robin Williams, Bruce Willis, Malcolm McDowell, Jamie Lee Curtis and Japan's T.M. Revolution. Ellen Degenerous had even specifically requested his art to appear on her show in 2007. The political world has taken to the soft-satire, as Ambassadors for Switzerland are also on his roster of high profile collectors. Plasticgod has been exhibiting in museums and galleries since 2001 and has shown extensively (over 200 shows) to which in 2009 Plasticgod reached his highest achievement of #1 selling artist at the Hello Kitty 35th Anniversary "Three Apples" Exhibition with over 1250 pieces sold. Other milestones include being the crowd favorite at the The Vader Project exhibition that traveled 3 continents and being interviewed for Vanity Fair among 4 other top artists in the United States. Moving into the world of TV and Web, Plasticgod has had his works seen on major network shows like MTV's The Real World Hollywood, HGTV The Antonio Treatment, FuelTV, Your LA on NBC and Rocketboom. He's had press in international magazines such as Italian Vogue and Elle, as well as two issues in Entertainment Weekly, Sportswear, Juxtapoz, two covers for BPM and mentions in the New York and Los Angeles Times, it's no wonder he's been dubbed the "The 21st Century Warhol". His own twist on celebrity caricature comprises the popular "Heads" collection of over 1200 pop and political icons. These icons are now taking form in the shape of 3-D vinyl toys as Plasticgod supplied the exclusive Moonman vinyl toy for the 2007 MTV VMA's and the very popular Axis of Evil toy set. Socially and environmentally conscious, Plasticgod gives back! He's been involved in numerous charities raising money for Hurricane Katrina, tsunami relief, cancer research, breast cancer awareness, alcohol and drug rehabilitation, animal rights, USC Special Olympics, human rights, children's fundraisers, various "green" foundations and the list goes on. Challenging his own boundaries, Plasticgod has been branching out into new avenues involving his art, what falls from the tree next? Wait and see.
